Consultations

All our consultations are by appointment only although urgent cases will be seen as soon as possible.

We will make every effort to help you see the vet you want, when you want.

If we need to see your pet for re-examination it is always better to see the same vet so please specify who you would like to see when booking the appointment.

Dental Treatments

Oral surgeries are usually day cases, which means your pet will be admitted in the morning and go home the same day. A general anaesthetic is always required when having any oral health treatment, as it is not possible to do a good oral procedure on a conscious animal. This is for your pet’s safety and comfort and allows the vet to do a thorough investigation of your pet’s mouth including dental x-rays if necessary.

Descale

A descale is a procedure where tartar, which can be seen on the surface of the teeth, is cleaned away. This allows the vet to thoroughly examine the teeth and surrounding gums. Some dogs and all cats require an X-ray to highlight any dental disease hiding below the gumline and assists the veterinary surgeon in deciding the appropriate course of treatment for your pet.

Rest and recuperate

When you take your pet home, they will need soft food for a few days while they recover if they have had extractions. If your pet requires pain relief this will be given during the procedure and additional pain relief will then be dispensed to be given at home.

If your pet requires pain relief this will be given during the procedure and additional pain relief can then be given at home. If a little bleeding occurs for a day or so, don’t worry this is quite normal, but if you are worried please contact your vet.

Prevention is always better than cure, so brushing your pet’s teeth daily from an early age is essential. Please ask our staff for advice and help with this how to train your pet to have their teeth brushed if needed.

If you would like to discuss any of these services further with our team of friendly and helpful staff contact either Weymouth or Dorchester surgeries for more information.

Home Visits

Unfortunately we are unable to offer this service at this time, we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

We are always willing to visit your pet at home but it will cost more than a surgery consultation.

Please be aware that there are certain occasions when a home visit may not be possible or appropriate as we cannot carry the full range of equipment and drugs on a visit as are available at the surgery.

To arrange a visit please telephone as early as possible so that we can plan our day’s work.

In-House Laboratory

Having our own laboratory allows us to run a wide range of tests on blood and urine, examine skin scrapings and other samples and have the results the same day. We also run pre-anaesthetic blood tests to ensure that patients are healthy enough to undergo a general anaesthetic.

Inpatients

We appreciate that cats and dogs are often not comfortable in each others company and so we have separate wards and operating facilities for each of them so they never meet during their stay with us.

Both our dog and cat wards are individually temperature controlled with heating for the winter and air-conditioning in the summer. They have hygeinic stainless steel kennels which are fitted with waterproof mattresses and fleece beds for dogs, and blankets and dens for cats. All are glass fronted rather than barred. Our cat ward is also soundproof and overlooked by our nursing station through a window, so our feline patients can be closely monitored without stressing them.

Nurse Clinics

Much of our preventative health care is in the hands of our nursing team and you will find them friendly, approachable and very willing to help. Our nurses carry out a variety of minor procedures including microchipping, nail clipping and suture removal. They run clinics in puppy health, diabetes, Schirmer Eye testing and weight control as well as providing advice on worming, flea control, dental care and feeding. Nurse clinics are run at both Weymouth and Dorchester – just ring or call in to book your appointment.

Prescriptions

You can arrange to have your repeat medications ready for collection by leaving a message on our direct dial prescription line 01305 752441. You can also fill out our online prescription request form.

Please remember to give us at least 24 hours notice.

Do remember we are obliged by law to carry out regular re-examinations of patients on long term medication. This is for the safety of your pet.

The frequency of these re-examinations is at the discretion of the clinician in charge of the case but is usually between 3 and 6 months.
