What do you do as a Practice Director?

As a PD for Dave cumber Vets I oversee everything from rota’s to financial, dealing with suppliers, advertising, charity events, IT and much more, making sure that pets, staff and clients are happy and that we deliver the best service possible.

With my Customer Service hat on, I run the reception team, do the rotas, make sure that reception is run as smoothly and professionally as possible on a daily basis. As Customer Accounts Manager i deal with any payment or invoicing issues that may arise. I also oversee the daily running of the practice overseeing the Vets, Nurses and receptionist team, making sure that everything is done accordingly and efficiently to give the best possible care. It’s my job to make sure that all staff are up to date with any training that is needed, to make sure that we are compliment to Practice Standards and all Health and Safety within the work place. To hold team and full practice meetings each week, making sure staff are fully up to date with any changes that maybe happening,

I’m a member of the VPMA, and BVRA . I’m very excited about the BVRA as this is the first time that the Veterinary Receptionist has been recognised by the British Veterinary Association and will have specific training and support for the job, and is now a recognised job role within the industry.

Why did you come to work in a Veterinary office?

Ive always wanted to work in the veterinary field or with horses since I can remember.  I came from a family that have always been involved with horses so I could ride before I could walk. This is what lead me to my first years in equine veterinary.

How did you become a Veterinary practice Director?

I started in an equine practice (Grant & Partners, Somerset) when I was 16, after spending a year at Leigh Equestrian, this gave me the insight into what it would be like, from then I always knew I wanted to be in practice either as a nurse or in an admin role, I never thought I would end up as a Practice Manager, let alone Director of a practice.

After leaving Grant and Partners I then went on to work for Golledge Electronics and Battens Private Law for 8 years. This gave me the administration and customer relations skills and knowledge that I would need to work in office within a practice.

Once I had gained my relevant training , The college of laws anti-money laundering, Customer Care and The Exceptional PA Diploma, along with Signature Service and introduction to Health and Safety within the workplace.

I then moved on to run my own Event Groom business within the equine industry in Somerset. Whilst doing this I then got asked to go for an interview with Kingfisher Veterinary Practice as a receptionist / Animal Nurse Assistant. I stayed with Kingfisher for 2 years and ran the groom business alongside. In 2012 we relocated to Weymouth, this is when I started work for Moorcroft Vets, and got involved with Cats Protection. I had two top of the range catteries that I ran from my garden that held up to 15 cats at a time.  I then did a number of courses in Feline origins and Behaviour. This is when I also became more interested in the daily running of a practice and did more on the office / accounts side of things. After 4 years at Moorcroft vets I decided it was time to move and have been at Dave Cumber Vets since June 2016, starting as Assistant Practice Manager, then moving my way up to Practice Manager and now Practice Director.

Tell us about your pets. What are their names, ages, histories and personalities?

I have 1 rescue dog from Romania that i've had now for 2 years. He came over as a 13 week old pup. His name is Zeus and he is a German Shephard cross. I also have one very fluffy tortti cat called Evie who was found dumped near a river when she was a kitten who is now 14 years old.

What are your personal interests, and achievements?

I love to spend as much time on or in the sea, i have a number of SUP boards and body boards, and we also have a jet ski, that we like to go out and beach hop and spend time on.  I also enjoy sea swimming and snorkelling.  I love hiking and going to the gym. One of my biggest achievements was training for a boxing match and competing in front of Frank Bruno and 400 spectators.
